National Showcase 2006
National Showcase is a competition all
about
theatrical skating. This year's event was
hosted by the
Northern Ice Skating Club in Oak Lawn,
Illinois. The competition took place
from August 2-6. Skaters from both the
United States and Canada participated.
This competition gives opportunities for
figure skaters to be artistic and creative.
There are events for single skaters, duets,
small ensembles and production numbers. For single skaters, categories include
light entertainment, dramatic entertainment,
and improvisation.
Singles and duets compete under
spotlights.
Some very creative skating is done at
these competitions. Skaters of all ages
enjoy dressing up in costumes and having fun
on the ice. It is common to see many boys
skating to Star Wars themes, girls dressed
as queens, and skaters wearing bathing suits
on the ice. Some skaters attach full size
dolls with skates to themselves and skate
with "a partner." Props are used. These
events are all about fun and enjoying
skating.
